Hormones are a Powerful Anti Aging Skin Care Ingredient

Hormones are naturally found in the body and certain foods.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, located in the center of the brain but outside the blood-brain barrier. Human melatonin production decreases as a person ages. Besides its function as synchronizer of the biological clock, melatonin also exerts a powerful antioxidant activity.

Products containing melatonin have been available over-the-counter as a dietary supplement in the United States since the mid-1990s.  One study conducted by researchers of the University of Granada’s Institute of Biotechnology found that consuming melatonin may neutralize oxidative damage and delay the neurodegenerative process of aging.

When applied to the skin, the hormonal components are absorbed and accrue; when enough melatonin has gathered, it works to strengthen the skin by renewing the cells. Small concentrations can have a noticeable effect on enhancing the skin and diminishing the effects of aging.

DHEA is another hormone naturally found in large amounts within the skin. Now also use as a skin protectant and anti-inflammatory agent, traditionally used to reduce stress is one of the most abundant hormones in the body.

DHEA production peaks in the mid 20’s; by age 70, the hormone has significantly diminished. Made from cholesterol, DHEA is known as a prohormone, meaning it can convert into whatever the body needs, like estrogen, testosterone or progesterone.

For a healthy body when taken in pill form, DHEA offers multiple benefits, like reducing oxidation from cholesterol, increasing the activity of the enzymes that protect against circulatory problems and calming the nervous system to reduce stress and depression.

When DHEA is converted into estrogen, increasing collagen for a thicker and healthier skin.

Some research even suggest that using it directly on the skin can reinforced the blood vessels and make them stronger, preventing the skin from taking on a burnt, dry look that eventually peels because of the anti-inflammatory properties.
